Today’s post features some highly talked about lip products! If you haven’t heard of the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, you might have been living under a rock for the past year. In any case, here is what you need to know:
- They cost $6
- There are 22 original colors
- 11 new colors were just released in early January
- They can be purchase on NYX’s own website or from other makeup retailer like Ulta.
Now on to the good stuff! I chose five of the new colors to try out for you guys, and myself let’s be honest!
I’ll be honest, these shades surprised me. The shade I grabbed at the last minute turned out to be my favorite and the one I was sure I would love was a bit of a disappointment. I would say that these are generally very similar to the original matte lip creams (with one obvious exception) and I might even pick up one or two more. The biggest issue with the new colors is that the swatches on the website are not very precise. That was one of the reasons I decided I had to put up this review – to get accurate swatches online for other shoppers to reference.
Shade 1: Moscow This was the first color I picked out,but I know it’s definitely not going to be for every one! It is a gorgeous deep royal blue. I would say this is pretty wearable, especially for a blue shade. I will say that you have to put a bit of effort in to get full coverage. This isn’t a huge negative to me though as there are so few blue products, especially in matte finishes, that I’m willing to put in an extra minute while applying.
Shade 2: Havana This shade was actually a huge disappointment for me. I had purple hair for around 18 months and in that time I grew to LOVE purple lipstick. This is just not cutting it. Right out of the box the texture of the swatch is clearly not the same as the other colors. I have to believe that I got a dud because the consistency is completely unlike any Soft Matte Lip Cream I’ve ever owned. It was impossible to get this shade to be fully opaque and I felt like the unevenness of the color really did not do my lips any favors. If you’ve gotten this color let me know how yours feels because I would like to know whether it’s an issue with this color or just the specific product I received.
Shade 3: Vancouver This is in the top two of the colors I selected. The color is not very similar to the swatch on the website, but as I love dark and purple lips I ended up loving it even more! A friend of mine was expecting more of a pink and was very disappointing so use caution when checking the swatches on the NYX site. I photographed all of these shades without lip liner to get a true read on them but for this color I would definitely recommend using one. I would also say that this is the driest color of the lot so moisturize your lips thoroughly to avoid dryness and cracking.
Shade 4: MadridI’ll be honest – I’m not a big red lip girl. I enjoy the look but I feel like I look like a Christmas tree, so I was hoping that this would be slightly more brown as the website indicated. However this really is a true red. I would say that this is another color where lip liner is required but overall I think it’s a nice red. I’m going to try it out another time or two but as someone who has left their red lipstick days behind them – this is pretty nice.
Shade 5: DubaiI saved the best for last! This is definitely my favorite of the five colors I purchased, and I almost didn’t get it! I was waffling between getting this or another lip product but I tossed in my cart in the end to nab that free shipping – and I am so glad I did! This is my new favorite nude! But who am I to say? The color does get lighter as it dries and you wear it longer. It does get completely matte but it does take a bit of time to dry. One of the best things about this shade is that it wears off very nicely – no harsh lines!
So there you have it, five of the newest NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, in more detail than you might ever need to now! Be sure to let me know if you’ve tried any of the new products from NYX, or if you have any other matte favorites I should try! Have a great day!
